What is the Independent Living Philosophy?

Independent Living is a philosophy and a movement of people with disabilities who strive for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. They want the same choices and opportunities in their everyday lives as those without disabilities. They are experts in their own needs. A disability is only part of who they are. They are capable people who find creative ways to overcome barriers. Although people with disabilities are learning to accept and understand their own limitations; they choose to focus on their strengths and want their non-disabled neighbors to do the same.
